Marketing Fail

Thursday, August 24th, 2017

So, based off of my extensive viewing of Mad Men, I know that marketing is supposed to put the idea in your head that what you’re being shown is supposed to spark something in you, such that you sort of subconsciously try to choose that item over other items.

However, there are times where this completely fails.

For instance, right now I have that stupid Neil Diamond Sweet Caroline stuck in my head, because of that one commercial. Except, I have completely forgotten what that commercial was about. I’ve been watching “live” TV, as compared to DVRd or downloaded TV with no commercials ( but plenty of product placement, looking at your german beer in DD’s fridge in The Defenders, still won’t buy you, but whatever ), and this commercial has been peppered on the TV ( OMG ITS ON RIGHT NOW!!!! ) constantly.

The fail is that I couldn’t, for the life of me remember what the product was for. Since the wife has been sitting right next to me as well, I asked her, and all I could say was I think it’s insurance? Had to look it up on-line to find out it was for a car company.

Anyway, in my mind, that’s a complete fail, and you need to re-work how you do your commercials, b/c while the song is memorable – Hello, Neil Diamond … your commercial was not.

OMG, so true.

Here’s how I know that the Earth isn’t flat ( minus science, and seeing the curvature and stuff ).

If the Earth were flat. Cat’s would have pushed everything off of it by now.

West Coast

I definitely want a place overlooking the ocean in the Pacific Northwest. Not a whole lot around there, but I think I’d be ok with that.

Why is the Trump Presidency Such a Rolling Disaster.

Thursday, March 16th, 2017

Because he won the election under suspicious circumstances?

Because showed up to the White House expecting that he’s basically the new boss inheriting Obama’s staff, and was shocked to find out he needed to provide his own people?

Because he has no interest in actually leading the country, or serving the people, even the ones who voted for him?

Because going into his third month, most of the appointed government positions are still vacant?

Because many of the people he has appointed are put in charge of departments they don’t understand at best, or vehemently opposed them outright at worst.

Because he thinks the Presidency is a 9-5 job and he takes early Fridays and spends every weekend in Florida?

Because he’s still not divested himself from his personal empire?

Because he’s using the Presidency to make sweetheart deals at home and abroad with dictators and unfriendly governments?

Because after lying his way through the election, he decided to keep on lying each and every day in office?

Because he’s had not one, not two, but three senior staff members quit because they worked for the Russians?

Because he’s a petty, vindictive man more interested in bullying people into respecting him than earning it through his actions?

Because he’s insulted and alienated his entire Intelligence Community?

Because he’s insulted and alienated almost the entire national media?

Because he’s alienated our international allies, both political and military?

Because all indications are he was a horrible businessman who coasted to success in his daddy’s pocket?

Because he’s systematically destroying all the economic, ethical and environmental safeguards of our government, and it turns out some people care about those things?

Because his Chief of Staff is an alt-right, neo-Nazi Crusader whose stated goal is to collapse the US government?

Because there’s a dossier composed by a respected intelligence officer from our closest ally on the planet which not only indicates that Trump is subject to blackmail, but may in fact be actively colluding with Russia in a bi-directional partnership to make a very small group of people very, very rich? And that with each passing week, more and more of the dossier turns out to be true?

Seems like any one of the above would be a potential cause of a train wreck. Trump just made it easy on everybody by doing them all so we wouldn’t have to choose.

What a guy!

Protesting, really?!

Instead of not doing anything ( protesting ), why don’t you actually get off your ass and figure out how to change things.

It’s not just the presidency, it’s local government, state government, change things there, and it’ll build up in all the other areas.

But no, it’s easier to go out and shout than it is to actually make real change.

Also, heaven forbid if you’re out there shouting and you didn’t actually vote. How about you start with change there. Lowest turnout for voters in 20 years?!

Bunch of idiots.

Where did the math fail?

Seems simple to me … WTF do I know though.

It would seem to me that if you want to make things convenient for yourself and for your customers, namely by cutting down on cost of purchasing paper, printing it, mailing it. You wouldn’t charge a “Convenience” fee for credit cards.

I understand, CCCs, charge you a percentage of what is going through, but I would have to think that if you’re a large enough customer, that overall fee is going to be very small, and net you more of a gain than printing, sending, a paper statement.

A new dog.

This is Norman, we got him about a month ago.  He was born around July 1st ( probably a few days earlier, but this is easier to remember ).  He was a rescue dog that we got at a puppypalooza held at a local pet store.  He’s very cute, a bit stinky, and the cats tolerate him, which was a bit of a concern.  He knows he’s below Pumpkin, but probably above Pi, because he likes to try to mount Pi, but then again, so does Pumpkin some times….poor Pi.

Jason is Hilarious

Holy shit, two in a row, I must have a fever!  Ok, not really.

I use mac-minis for my “home theaters”.  I have one in the living room, and one in the basement “play room”.  I use to, long time ago, use a hacked Xbox.  I ran XBMC on it, then HD became more prevalent and the Xbox couldn’t handle it, so I purchased my first mac mini.  I also started using NFS to mount external drives to the mac as my media drives to watch TVs/movies, etc.

Well, on reboot, unless you have it set up to auto mount the NFS drives, you have to manually mount them every time either the NFS server goes off line, the mac mini goes off line, etc.

The old way you use to auto mount NFS drives is via Disk Utility.  You’d put in your mount information and every time the box rebooted the NFS shares would re-mount for you, and then you’d also have your XBMC ( now Kodi ) auto start as well, and basically when you changed your TV Input to there, you have your XBMC screen and you can get right in to watching your show.

Around 10.8 or so of OS X ( OS Ten, not X by the way ) they removed the option for NFS auto mounting via Disk Utility.  Now, while OS X is built off of a *nix variant, you do have things such as /etc/auto_home, /etc/autofs, /etc/fstab, I really didn’t want to mess with them and potentially cause issues.  Plus the /Volumes directory is the automatic mounted directory, it’s what I already had my mount points set to in XBMC/Kodi, and while trivial to change, let’s be real, I’m super lazy.

So, I went with what most procrastinators do, I only dealt with it when it popped it’s head up.  Meaning I go in to XBMC/Kodi and I see that the volume isn’t mounted.  I’d pop open Remote Desktop, hit cmd-space, select Finder, hit cmd-k and go through a quick return, cmd-k, down arrow, quick return, then a cmd-tab to get back in to XBMC/Kodi…and I did this for a couple of years, because it’s just too much of an issue to figure out NFS for mac.

Three Years Out

Saturday, March 28th, 2015

It’s been approximately three years since I’d been diagnosed with Head and Neck Cancer, or Squamos Cell Carcinoma due to HPV of the head and neck. I had one of many follow-ups with my ENT a couple weeks ago and we’re now going to move on to a four month check up schedule instead of a three month schedule. Likewise, I had my blood and radiation oncologist visits back in September, and we’re now on a yearly check-up rate with them.

How have things been?

Good question, that’s the problem with memory, most people don’t tend to think about things, even when they’re in the forefront, such as how things taste. After I was able to eat again some things didn’t taste right. For instance, candy tasted horrible, very fake. Which isn’t a big shocker if anyone has looked at the ingredients of candy lately. However, like with most things, eventually that weird taste went away, or maybe I started to accept it for the taste that it was, I dunno.

Likewise, the taste of alcohol. I have several nice bottles of bourbon/whiskey/whisky/scotch that I can’t really enjoy any more. However, some things, like Louis XIII de Rémy Martin are quite enjoyable. I also really enjoy the taste of IPAs over other types of beers as well. Although Guinness is still good in my book too.
