I read in a magazine or a news article some where that the gate attendants call these people who mill about in front of a gate, “Gate Lice”.
I’m not quite sure why they do it, this isn’t Southwest where you can board any time, so that leaves the plethora of all the other airlines that board based on some schedule. In United’s case, it’s 1st Class, Global Services, 1K go first, and they go on a red carpet to make them feel special. It’s supposed to be Star Alliance Gold, Premier Execs next; followed by Premier and Seating area 1. Then you have seating area 2, 3, then finally the dregs of the plane, seating area 4. Yes, as you can tell, I might have flown a couple times on United, but this leads me in to my next thought.
This only pertains to people who are already milling about. This thought doesn’t really concern the people late to the gate, because they’re not part of the problem. When you’re at the gate, several times an attendant will say over the PA the boarding process and even tell you about these big huge numbers that are on your boarding pass.

If you don’t normally fly, you’d think you would pay attention to some important information that you can see is being said, by the attendant, that’s right in front of you, and follow said instructions.
